Museum of Vancouver explores Austria’s enviable

social housing system with new exhibition:

- The Vienna Model -

What Vancouver can learn about designing housing for the 21st century city.

VANCOUVER, BC – The Museum of Vancouver (MOV) is pleased to present a fascinating exhibition that explores housing in Vienna, Austria, through its portrait of the city’s pathbreaking approach to architecture, urban life, neighborhood revitalization, and the creation of new communities.

The Vienna Model: Housing for the 21st Century City – on view at MOV from May 17 through July 16, 2017 – features housing projects that illustrate an innovative approach to architecture while advancing social housing in the modern metropolis.

Vancouver consistently ranks alongside the Vienna as one of the world’s most livable cities, but our city has a lot to learn from its European counterpart in terms of alternative approaches to housing.

The Vienna Model goes beyond displaying compelling buildings, it describes the design and planning process in a stable housing market, where 60% of the population lives in municipally built, owned, or managed housing.

As Vancouver embarks upon a community engagement process revolving around housing, this project - curated by Wolfgang Förster and William Menkins - expands the discussion about urban planning options, and encourages dialogue around the future of the city.

The Vienna Model spotlights eight key principles through a series of photographs and interpretive displays: Social Mixing, Developing New Urban Areas, Diversity and Integration, Citizen Participation, Environment and Climate Protection, Developing Existing Housing Stock, Building on the Outskirts, Use and Design of Public Spaces, and the Role of Art in housing developments.
