Play House: The architecture of Daniel Evan White

Thursday, October 17, 2013 to Sunday, March 23, 2014

“I had the impression of being in the presence of a private man, a man who had a Buddha-like quality and who made a house speak the way a Dylan Thomas poem makes a grown man weep or a Lawren Harris clean line painting evokes the grandeur of Canada.”
–Bruce Fraser, in his 2012 eulogy to Daniel Evan White

Daniel Evan White knew exactly how to play with houses. The modest Vancouver architect drove innovation along the west coast from 1960 to 2012, creating homes that his clients claim were life changing. Discover his remarkable work in this first retrospective of his career.

Play House ventures through Daniel Evan White’s mind, hands, and eyes to explore the creative process that transforms the dream home from desire into reality. The exhibition includes stories from clients and contractors, a replica of the Máté House built to 1:4 scale, projections, smaller models, 3D computer models, and an area where visitors can get hands on with some of Dan’s favourite geometric shapes.

The exhibition refreshes our ideas of the typical house and its functions, with each featured project becoming a commentary on contemporary culture, innovation, risk, and the idea of play. Yet again, the MOV strikes out to introduce Vancouverites to one of their own incredibly talented people.

What is the link between human happiness and design? Can art and design make us kinder? Can we design more trust or altruism into the city?

This fall, MOV challenged students from CityStudio, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and SFU’s School of Interactive Art and Technology to create experiments and designs to test or boost feelings of trust and connection among total strangers.

Come experience their creations for one day only at the Happy City Machine design laboratory! Test imaginative designs, installations and social experiments that reveal new insights about ourselves and the city around us. Willing participants will have their responses measured by neuroscientist Dr. Colin Ellard. Then, after an afternoon of experiments and fun, we will share what we’ve learned.

*Please note: this event is not the book launch party for Happy City. That's a private event in the evening. For media inquiries about the evening launch, please contact Patricia Kells: PKells@randomhouse.com

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics is a documentary film that explores the life and career of the architectural photographer Julius Shulman, who died at age 98 in 2009. Shulman was widely considered to be the world's greatest and most well-known architectural photographer. The film highlights his iconic photos which were frequently populated with human models and striking landscapes, often combining the organic with the synthetic and melding nature with contemporary design. The film highlights how these images shaped the careers of some of the great architects of the 20th Century, notably Richard Neutra, John Lautner and the Case Study Architects.
