Vancouver Imagined: The Way We Weren't

Thursday, February 6, 2014 to Sunday, May 11, 2014

The art of city building has always required many talents. Builders and architects are often remembered for their accomplished constructions, but architectural illustrators have frequently been overlooked. This collection of plans depicts architectural and urban projects that were proposed in Vancouver at different historical periods but never materialized. This MOV Studio exhibition shares 21 unrealized plans and drawings by architects, city planners, and engineers including Harland Bartholomew, Arthur Erickson, I.M Pei, Andrew Malczewski, and others, from 1910-2000.

Guest Curator: Jason Vanderhill, creator of the Illustrated Vancouver blog.

Vancouver has been shaped by multiple decisions about what we chose to do and not to do. The built environment surrounding us provides clues about the nature of these debates, but it doesn’t tell us the full story. Vancouver Imagined: The Way We Weren't, guest curated by Jason Vanderhill of Illustrated Vancouver, showcases the work of architectural illustrators and model makers in the context of unrealized urban development projects, and provides a unique way to understand the city. Had these projects been given full assent, Vancouver would look dramatically different than it does today.

Spend a relaxed evening amongst other enthusiastic drawers of all skill levels. Find inspiration in the fantastical architectural renderings in Vancouver Imagined, the MOV's view of English Bay and the West End; our permanent and feature exhibitions; and amongst each other. Draw what you see, or sketch an imagined Vancouver as it might have once been, or is still yet to be.

Presented in partnership with Draw by Night and the Vancouver Urban Sketchers.
